Rico Dowdle – RB – Pittsburgh Steelers – Two years, $12.25 Million
What I like about it:
Despite being a five-year veteran, most of Dowdle’s carries have come over the past two seasons with expanded roles in his last season in Dallas (274 touches) and his one year in Carolina (275 touches). At age 27, he still has plenty left in the tank if Pittsburgh decides to give him the work.
When given the bigger workload in the wake of Chuba Hubbard’s 2025 injury, Dowdle produced for fantasy owners. In Weeks 5-9, Dowdle had three games over 130 yards rushing, including a 206-yard performance against Miami. In our system, he posted a 53% clutch rating, with nine clutch games in 17 tries.
Right now, the options at QB for the Steelers are bringing Aaron Rodgers back, signing Kirk Cousins, rolling with Mason Rudolph, or using a draft pick in an underwhelming QB class. None of those options makes me want to run out and draft PIT WRs. However, this bodes well for Dowdle and the Steelers’ run game. With a lack of firepower at the QB spot, Mike McCarthy will figure to lean on the run game heavily. This should also produce check-down opportunities for Dowdle, which only adds to the PPR appeal.

What makes me go hmmm:
When Hubbard returned, it had an impact on Dowdle’s opportunities, and he failed to record a clutch game in the final three weeks of the season. He also became very dependent on receptions to salvage any sort of fantasy relevance. After recording six total TDs from Weeks 3-10, he scored just one more touchdown the rest of the season. If you counted on him for fantasy playoff wins, you most likely came up short.
At this point, we are all speculating on what his role will be. Jaylen Warren is still a solid back and was 69% consistent himself in 2025. Despite that, he’s not considered a three-down back and does most of his work on third down. Let’s also not forget that 2025 rookie Kaleb Johnson is still on the roster and was barely used in his first season. This could eat into Dowdle’s third-down work, even though he’s looked at as more of a three-down RB. Unfortunately, we have to wait and see how the situation plays out through the draft and training camp.
Overall Take:
Despite Warren being in Pittsburgh, I still like Dowdle heading into draft season. He’s talented enough on all downs to take over the job from Warren, and even if he doesn’t, there will be enough work for him to be a relevant fantasy back. It will most likely eat into his PPR production, but it could drive his price tag down a bit and make him a value pick. With the QB position up in the air, Pittsburgh will continue to lean on its RBs to win games. Monitor this one over the summer, but I am looking for Dowdle in all my drafts.
