Chargers Fantasy Football: Najee Harris Vs. Omarion Hampton Over/Under

Now that Najee Harris is out of Pittsburgh, can he hold off Omarion Hampton and be the lead back for the Chargers and your fantasy team?

Najee Harris chose to take his talents to Lalaland and sign a one-year deal with the Chargers for $5.25 million. With the deal being for just a year, it’s clear he’s not the long-term guy. I hear the guy the Chargers drafted in the first round happens to play the same position. Let’s see how this impacts Harris’ fantasy outlook.

We are Harris fans here at Big Guy Fantasy Sports. He’s like your dad’s white and blue New Balance, not spectacular, but gets the job done time after time. Over the past three seasons, Harris has put up clutch ratings of 76%, 53%, and 59%. Yes, the consistency dropped off a bit, but that’s due to his regression in the passing game since his rookie season. Harris recorded 74 receptions in 2021, but tallied just 36 in 2024 with zero rushing touchdowns. On the positive side, he hasn’t missed a game in his career and has put up at least 1000 yards and six rushing scores in each season.

A few things set Harris up for success as a Charger. Jim Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman want to pound the football, and Harris is the perfect guy. Not flashy, not fast, but gains tough yards and can score inside the red zone. Roman’s offenses usually finish in the Top 10 in rush attempts, so the chances will be there.

At just 27 years old, it seems like he’s been in the league for more than just four years. In those four years, Harris has seen at least 255 carries per season. So the mileage is a bit high, but he’s got plenty left in the tank. On just a one-year deal, he’s going to be motivated to get one more multi-year deal before his career is over. This usually seems to be a solid motivator.

The Chargers wanted to solidify the future at the running back position by adding North Carolina battering ram Omarion Hampton in the first round of the draft. His violent running style is a perfect fit for what the Chargers want to do. Will it eat into Harris’s opportunities? Yes. Should there be enough left for Harris to be useful? 

Players This Will Help:

Justin Herbert– Harris and Hampton are the best 1-2 punch Herbert has had. They don’t catch a ton of balls, but they will help set up the passing game.

Kimani Vidal –Vidal showed some big-play flashes in 2024. Since Harris and Hampton aren’t big-time receivers, and Hampton needs work in pass protection, Vidal should see the majority of the third-down duties. He’s a sneaky later-round flex play for deeper leagues.

Kaleb Johnson (Steelers) – As much as we want Jaylen Warren to be a lead dog, he simply isn’t. Johnson should slot into Harris’ old role and provide fantasy value.

Players This Will Hurt:

Omarion Hampton – It would be great to see Hampton as a lead back, but at least initially, Hampton and Harris eat into each other’s rushing attempts.

Overall Outlook

At his current ADP of pick #88 overall, Harris is the 31st back off the board. I’m ok with that if you’re expecting him to be a flex option. Hopefully, you won’t need to rely on him as your RB2, as I do see this job becoming Hampton’s. Even if that happens, Harris does enough to get solid flex production, and in this offense, there should be plenty of rushing attempts to go around.
