Welcome to NFL Week 1 DFS! The NFL DFS landscape is open, with all kinds of opportunities and chaos. The challenge is balancing cheap value with trustworthy production. The goal is simple: stay consistent, cash in, and climb into the green.
Navigating the Slate
This week’s DFS slate is the same as others; injuries, depth chart changes, and other key roster moves have us scrambling.
Our final lineup reflects a “consistently cash” mindset — the kind of structure aimed at 50/50s and double-ups, not high-risk tournaments. It’s about profit through balance, not boom-or-bust swings.
QB – Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – $5900
When I wrote about Mayfield in my start/sit for Week 1, he hadn’t gotten a contract extension. Now he’s a $55 million man on a mission. Jalen McMillan has been ruled out for this week, but Emeka Egbuka is a full go. The offense still has a few weapons, and it gives us a stack with his number-one target for a reasonable price. Vegas has this game’s total at 50.5, so there will be plenty of fantasy goodness to go around.
Honorable Mention – Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Tyler Shough
RB – Chase Brown, Cincinnati Bengals – $7100
Brown was one of my favorite redraft values based on his ADP and the offense he will play in. For Week 1, he draws a Bucs defense that has Vita Vea locked up, but doesn’t figure to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents. This is a game you want exposure to this week, and Brown will be one of three players we are rolling with. He should get back to his clutch ways and then some this week.
MarShawn Lloyd, Green Bay Packers – $4,800
The talent is there, but it’s been a matter of staying healthy. It’s not the greatest matchup against a tough Minnesota defense, but you don’t get lead running backs for $4,800, and the amount of salary relief that gives us for our cash lineups is huge. Ownership is likely to be high on him, so we’ll just ride with the masses here with Lloyd.
Honorable Mention – Omarion Hampton, De’Von Achane, D’Andre Swift, Kenny Gainwell
WR – DeVonta Smith, Philadelphia Eagles – $6,600
Smith just might be one of my favorite plays on the entire slate. I don’t believe in the Washington secondary, and with A.J. Brown out of town, Smith is the clear-cut WR1 in an offense that should be more productive with Sean Mannion calling plays. Kevin Patullo stunk last season, and had ripple effects across the whole offense. This is a soft Week 1 matchup for the Philadelphia passing attack, and Smith should be the main beneficiary of that.
Emeka Egbuka, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – $6,200
Egbuka is reported to be a “full-go” for this one, and with Jalen McMillan listed as doubtful, it’s wheels up for the second-year wideout. Yes, Chris Godwin will be out there, and there’s been some hype around rookie Ted Hurst, but Egbuka is the WR1 for this team, and this game very well could be the highest-scoring game on the main slate. The Cincy defense should be improved in 2026, but the Tampa Bay offense will be pushed in this one, which is good for the Bucs’ passing volume.
DK Metcalf, Pittsburgh Steelers – $5400
The Falcons’ pass rush is without a couple of key pieces, so Aaron Rodgers should have time to get the ball out, and Metcalf figures to be his favorite target. It also helps that the Falcons’ secondary isn’t great either. I don’t have much faith in the Steelers’ passing attack, but this week Metcalf makes a ton of sense.
Honorable Mention – Chris Olave, Tetairoa McMillan, Zay Flowers, Tee Higgins/Ja’Marr Chase
Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens – $3900
Indy allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to tight ends in 2025, and as much as I want to believe in my team’s defense, there are way too many holes in the back end. Andrews enters 2026 as the leading pass-catching tight end with little competition for targets at the position. The Ravens added some youth at WR, but Andrews will continue to be right there with Zay Flowers as Lamar Jackson’s favorite targets. He’s one of my favorite values this week.
Honorable Mention – Dallas Goedert, Cade Otton, Kyle Pitts Sr.
Texans DST – $2,900
If you have leftover money and want to move up to the Jaguars or Steelers, be my guest. However, this Texans defense is loaded with talent, has played Josh Allen well in the past, particularly at home, and they are below $3,000 on DraftKings. Houston boasts one of the best defenses in football, and they had 15 points in the win against Buffalo last season, thanks to eight sacks and three turnovers. It’s a new year, but at the defense spot here, let’s bet on talent and opportunity, rather than avoiding it simply because they are playing Buffalo.
