I’m sure those with shares of Bears running back Tarik Cohen last season were thrilled by his top twelve finish (RB11) in PPR leagues. Yet, these same owners were less than pleased with the speedster’s sub three point performances (2.3, 2.9) in weeks nine and 16, respectively.

When in a head-to-head fantasy football league, you want players on your team who are consistent fantasy performers from week to week. Here at Big Guy Fantasy Sports, consistency is our business. If you’re unfamiliar with the Consistency Rankings and Clutch Reports at BGFS, I recommend you take a look. Basically, a player is consistent (earns a Clutch Game) when he meets or exceeds your league’s average for points scored in a given week. A player’s Clutch Rating (CR) is based on the percentage of games he earned a Clutch Game (CG) against the number of games played.

Bob Lung has been looking at consistency in fantasy football for 15+ years, but from a mostly PPR-only lens. Well, the times they are a changin! For the second consecutive year, I will be looking at the difference in consistency between PPR and Standard (non-PPR) scoring formats. The RB position is in the leadoff spot; whose consistency improved and whose declined may surprise you...

RB Consistency: PPR vs Standard Scoring

For our purposes, I compared the 2018 Clutch Reports of 103 RBs in Standard and PPR scoring methods. Of the 103 RBs evaluated, 57 (55.3%) saw no change in their Clutch Rate (CR) even with the scoring format changed. The scoring change did have an impact on RB consistency as 29 RBs (28.1%) saw a negative regression in their CR when switching from PPR to Standard scoring while 17 (16.6%) saw a CR increase when owners aren’t awarded a point per catch. It’s not surprising nearly double the amount of RBs saw a decrease in their CR than RBs who saw a positive increase. The consistency rates of some 2018 workhorse RBs were impacted in Standard scoring leagues.
