In the summer of 1963 the Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League held what would be the first ever fantasy football draft.  Shortly thereafter, the Kings X bar opened in Oakland and introduced fantasy football to its patrons.  Since the opening of the Kings X in 1968, fantasy football has snowballed into the multi-billion dollar industry that has spawned a radio network, network time devoted to fantasy on all the major sports networks, numerous websites, podcasts and even a clothing line.  In 2018, the Inaugural King’s Classic took place at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.  The idea was a dual effort of Canton native and creator Big Guy Fantasy Sports, Bob Lung, and Brad Evans of Yahoo Sports.  Their vision was for 24 of the best and brightest minds in fantasy football to assemble at the Hall of Fame in two divisions, for two drafts.  The divisions were named for the first two picks in the inaugural GOPPPL draft, first overall pick George Blanda, who was followed by the legendary Jim Brown.  Each player participated in both a snake and auction draft, with half of the $100 entry fee going to charity.

We added four more teams in Year 2 and had our drafts on Saturday, Aug 17. Once again with Sirius Fantasy Sports Radio in attendance!

Each week, we will recap the happenings in both divisions.  You can also follow along with each league by clicking the links below.  It’s anyone’s guess, but one thing is certain, it’s going to be a wild ride!

Games of the Week

Snake Division

https://fantasy.espn.com/football/league?leagueId=5325353

There were a few candidates for game of the week in the snake division, but the honor goes to the matchup of Pat Daugherty vs. Bob Harris, with Daugherty pulling out a win 112.3 to 111.3.  The victory was in large part thanks to the highest output of the season for wide out Robert Woods, who put up 29 points.  Sterling Shepard chipped in 16 and Baker Mayfield finally contributed in a solid outing, adding 16.  Harris got a 26 point efforts from Leonard Fournette and Lamar Jackson, while breakout tight end Darren Waller put up 12 points of his own, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the win.

Auction Division

Week 4 had no shortage of blowouts in the auction division, as the closest game was decided by 16 points.  Mike Clay defeated Jim Coventry 139.9 to 124 to run his record to 3-1.  Clay got big production from his wide receivers as Cooper Kupp, Kenny Golladay and Michael Thomas combined for 68 points on the week.  Coventry got a whopping 41 from Chris Godwin, 23 from Matthew Stafford at the QB spot, and 17 from LeSean McCoy, but took the L, dropping his record to 1-3.

Games of the Week

Snake Division

https://fantasy.espn.com/football/league?leagueId=5325353

Snake Division nail biter of the week honors go to the contest between Andy Behrens of Yahoo Sports and Jim Coventry of Rotowire with Behrens pulling out the 109.6 to 105.1 win.  The Yahoo team was led by Marvin Jones Jr.’s 22 points, while Aaron Jones and Larry Fitzgerald added 15 and 14 respectively.  Coventry got 26 out of Jameis Winston, while the Browns’ tandem of Nick Chubb and Odell Beckham Jr. chipped in 17 and 11 but it wasn’t enough to pull out the win.

Auction Division

In the Auction Division the margin of victory was a bit larger for the closest matchup of Week 3 with Curtis Patrick of RotoViz edging Dave Richard of CBS Sports 113.7 to 105.7.  Tyler Lockett led the way for the RotoViz squad with 32 points.  Brandin Cooks chipped in 20, and Phillip Rivers added 19 in the win.  Richard’s team was led by a 27 point outburst from Darren Waller, while the Patriots’ duo of Tom Brady and Julian Edelman combined for 39 in the close loss.

Games of the Week

Snake Division

https://fantasy.espn.com/football/league?leagueId=5325353

It doesn’t get much closer than the snake division game of the week that saw Full Time Fantasy’s Scott Atkins squeak by the Fantasy Executive Corey Parsons 133.3 to 132.7.  Atkins benefitted from 28 points from Dak Prescott as well as 17 a piece from wideouts D.J. Moore and Davante Adams.  Parsons’ team was led by Mark Andrews, Austin Ekeler and Matt Ryan who all scored over 20 points in week two, but it just wasn’t enough in the end.

Auction Division

https://fantasy.espn.com/football/league?leagueId=26923919

In the auction division, a low scoring slugfest between Bob Harris and Dave Richard was the tightest matchup of week 2, with Harris coming out on top with a 102.9 to 98.  The Football Diehards team was led by Antonio Brown, Peyton Barber and Aaron Rodgers who combined for nearly half the team’s points.  Richard’s team got 24 from Tom Brady, along with 30 combined from Davante Adams and James Conner, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

The inaugural season is over for the King's Classic - Jim Brown Division!

Thanks again to all of the participants and congrats to the winners!

Auction

The Jim Brown Division auction saved the best for last as the title matchup was one of the closest games of the season.  The Pro Football Focus team squeaked by Andy Behrens of Yahoo! with a final score of 156.15 – 155.30.  Patrick’s victory was fueled by performances from some long time fantasy studs as Antonio Brown and Russell Wilson both smashed their projections, with Brown more than doubling his predicted output.  Most of the credit should be given to 2018 fantasy football missing person of the year Doug Baldwin, who finally showed up at the right time for the PFF squad and helped Patrick win the first ever Jim Brown Auction.  As for the Yahoo! team, waiver pickups DaeSean Hamilton and Damien Williams both outplayed projections.  Green Bay running back Jamaal Williams did his best to bring the crown home for Behrens with just under 25 fantasy points, but it wasn’t enough.  Congratulations to Curtis Patrick on his auction win for the Jim Brown Division!

Snake

As exciting as the auction championship proved to be, the same cannot be said for the Jim Brown Snake Division championship as Dom Cintorino of RotoExperts routed Brad Evans of Yahoo!  118.60 – 75.75, despite Evans being the projected favorite heading into the game.  The RotoExperts team was led by a nearly 50 point outburst from Aaron Rodgers, as well as touchdowns from DaeSean Hamilton and Larry Fitzgerald.  These performances were much needed as Chris Hogan failed to score, and Eagles’ running back Josh Adams scored a mere .10 points for the week.  Still it was enough for Cintorino to take home the win.  Evans failed to have any players exceed weekly projected totals, except for the Falcons defense.  Broncos’ tight end Matt LaCosse failed to score, along with Melvin Gordon, Julio Jones and Philip Lindsay all failing to meet projections.  Both owners get a big hats’ off as they made the playoffs with 7-6 regular season marks, and a huge congrats goes to Dom Cintorino as the Jim Brown Snake champ!
