Standard League Consistency – Buy/Sell – Week 3

The blueprint to building a league-winning fantasy football roster is much like building a successful stock portfolio. The key is to accumulate as many high performing commodities as possible while minimizing your risk.  You want to sell a stock when you believe it’s worth has peaked and buy while the price is still at a value.  The results from Week 2 of the NFL season offer a great opportunity for the savvy fantasy footballer to do just that. Social media and fantasy pundits will tend to elevate any player who had a good first two games to elite status, while other players whose arrows are pointing up may go somewhat unnoticed. Take the advice of Gordon Gekko (“Greed is good!”) and go build a championship portfolio.

Phillip Lindsay, RB DEN

Had I told you on September 8th a Bronco rookie running back would start the season with two clutch games and be ranked in the top 12 of fantasy backs (RB11) in standard leagues, I would be patting myself on the back for my August analysis of Royce Freeman. However, it’s Phillip Lindsay, the UDFA from the University of Colorado, not Freeman, who has taken both the NFL and fantasy world by storm. Lindsay has not only out-snapped (54-45) the third round pick, but the former Buffalo has gained 79 more rushing yards than the Oregon product on just six more carries.

While I believe Phillip Lindsay will still be a valuable fantasy asset this season, Royce Freeman is still the back to own in standard leagues. Freeman and Lindsay both have two goalline carries on the season, but the former Duck is the only one to have one of these carries produce a touchdown. Look for Freeman to be the Broncos primary goal line back moving forward. Plus, the Broncos want to use the “hot hand” at running back from game to game and I don’t expect that to be Lindsay each and every week. The Broncos have a week three tilt against a Ravens defense that has given up the second fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs. Trade the Colorado product right now at peak value for another back with an established role like Alex Collins or Mark Ingram (who only has two weeks left on his suspension).
