It’s the heart of Awards Season in the entertainment industry as the stars of Hollywood gather in a decadent theater, wear designer clothes that cost more than my car, and recognize all of the outstanding work from the past year. Now, you won’t find any red carpets or elegant meals in these awards, only those most reliable, consistent fantasy contributors of the 2018 season in standard leagues. Now, without further ado...

WORST VALUE

This award goes to the Tight End that had the highest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the worst combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making him the worst value at tight end in 2018.

And the winner is….

Rob Gronkowski

Those fantasy managers who spent a second round pick (ADP 21) on Rob Gronkowski were less than thrilled with his dismal 38% Clutch Rate and TE8 finish. The years (2015 & 2017) of Gronk finishing as the TE1 with an Excellent CR seem like a lifetime ago. The cavalcade of injuries are taking a toll on the nine year veteran as he’s no longer the matchup nightmare of the past for opposing defenses. There’s a good chance Gronk retires after the Super Bowl, but he belongs nowhere near your roster even if he does return next season.

BEST VALUE

This award goes to the Tight End that had the lowest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making the best value at tight end in 2018.

And the winner is….

Eric Ebron

Despite certain fantasy analysts who doubted Ebron (insert Homer Simpson hiding in bushes GIF), the former Lion gave his fantasy owners a top three (TE3) non-PPR finish and a 69% CR all for the cost of a 13th round pick (ADP: 167). Consider this the book-end of my Eric Ebron apology tour as the UNC alum was one of the few bright spots in an awful tight end fantasy landscape. However, I’d be cautious with spending an early pick on Ebron this summer as his role will be unknown once Jack Doyle returns to full health.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the rookie Tight End that had ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Chris Herndon

Just as was the case at the wide receiver position, the rookie crop of tight ends in 2018 literally dropped the ball. Chris Herndon was the best of the bunch producing TE2 numbers (TE17) with a 58% CR. Herndon finished fourth on the Jets in targets (56) this season and keep him on your radar as a possible late-round sleeper in 2019.

CLUTCH-LESS

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the season with a high ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was lower than expected. Therefore, making him look more valuable (due to high points rank) than he was worth to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Jared Cook

Fantasy owners of Jared Cook were predictably pleased by his week four and 13 performances where he scored  23 and 22 points respectively on the way to a TE5 final ranking. However, these same owners likely saw their championship dreams come to an end (hand raised) when the Raiders’ tight end flopped with consecutive two point performances in weeks 15 and 16. Cook’s 44% Clutch Rate demonstrates why he is not to be trusted as a consistent, week-to-week fantasy contributor even on a team like Oakland Las Vegas (?) devoid of legitimate receiving talent.

CLUTCH-MORE

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the season with a low ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was higher than expected. Therefore, making him look less valuable (due to high points rank) to his Fantasy teams, when he was actually worth MORE!

And the winner is….

O.J. Howard

While O.J. Howard finished in the back-nine of the TE1 rankings (TE11) due to only playing ten games, his 80% CR was second among tight ends behind only Travis Kelce. At the beginning of the season, I was concerned about Cameron Brate eating into his teammate’s fantasy value, but those fears were put to bed this season. Howard (34/565/5) played in six less games than Brate (30/289/6) but nearly doubled his yardage totals. Draft the Bama product with confidence in August.

CLUTCH COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the 2017 season with a poor ranking in total Fantasy Points and consistency. However, in 2018, he had the greatest improvement in both categories making him very valuable to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

George Kittle

How did Kittle rebound from an unimpressive 2017 campaign which saw him produce TE2 (TE21) numbers and a porous 27% Clutch Rate? All he did was finish as the second best TE in fantasy points, third in consistency (75% CR), and broke the NFL record for most receiving yards in a season by a tight end (1,377). I’m a big fan of Kittle, but his ADP might be too rich for my blood in 2019 as I’m against drafting a tight end before the sixth round.

CLUTCH MVP

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the 2018 season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Travis Kelce

This was an easy choice as Kelce was not only the top ranked tight end in terms of fantasy points, but his 88% Clutch Rate was also the best for the position. With wunderkind quarterback Patrick Mahomes, elevating the Kansas City offense to another level, Kelce led the team in both targets (150) and receptions (103) in 2018. He’s a good bet to finish the 2019 season as the TE1, but I’m still not spending likely second round draft capital on a tight end.
