The Fantasy Football season of 2019 is in the books and there were many Clutch running backs and some, well, not so much. Therefore, in the heart of Awards season, it’s time to announce the 2019 Clutch Awards for the running backs!

WORST VALUE

This award goes to the running back that had the highest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the worst combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making him the worst value at running back in 2019.

And the winner is….

David Johnson

You know it’s bad when you win this award TWO YEARS IN A ROW! But after David Johnson was the #1 Fantasy player in 2016, but missed most the season in 2017 due to injuries, his ADP was in the Top 4 and much was expected in 2018, but he didn’t deliver. Heading into 2019, he wasn’t as highly ranked but he was expected to perform at a first round level and he wasn’t EVEN CLOSE! His 2019 ADP was RB5 but he ended 2019 ranked 38th in total points in 13 games and his consistency was 46%, which ranked him 30th. Now it looks like he could be replaced by Kenyan Drake? Oaf! We’ll see how this plays out this summer but I would stay away from DJ.

BEST VALUE

This award goes to the running back that had the lowest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making the best value at running back in 2019.

And the winner is….

Austin Ekeler

The hold-out of Melvin Gordon allowed Ekeler to grab the starting role for the Chargers and grab it, he did! His ADP was RB29, even with the hold-out, but he started the year with five straight Clutch Games. Many panicked when Gordon came back, but Ekeler maintained his consistency and ended the year ranked FOURTH in total points and ranked fifth in in Consistency with an 88% Clutch Rate. The future of Melvin Gordon is still unclear, but regardless, Ekeler is a great pick in PPR formats.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the rookie running back that had ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Josh Jacobs

Ok, so Jacobs was no Saquon Barkley in 2019, but he did earn over the “coveted” 60% Clutch Rate with a 62% consistency rate for the season. He ended the season ranked 21st in total points and should continue to be a solid RB2 pick in 2020. The key will be health as he did miss three games in his rookie season. His consistency ranked him 19th overall and his xConsistency ranked him 18th. There’s much to like in Jacobs as he heads in the new season.

CLUTCH-LESS

This award goes to the running back that ended the season with a high ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was lower than expected. Therefore, making him look more valuable (due to high points rank) than he was worth to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is…

Aaron Jones

This award really highlights the players that will be ranked too high in 2020. Aaron Jones looked amazing at times in 2019. His second place finish in total points puts him in the limelight as a Top 5 back in 2020. But, before you get too giddy, take a look at his 69% Clutch Rate that ranked him 12th in consistency. Yes, he’s still a RB1 for this upcoming season, just be cautious as Head Coach LeFluer loves to use Jamaal Williams quite often, which kills Jones’ consistency.

CLUTCH-MORE

This award goes to the running back that ended the season with a low ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was higher than expected. Therefore, making him look less valuable (due to high points rank) to his Fantasy teams, when he was actually worth MORE!

And the winner is….

James White

James White had an outstanding 2018, but most of us kind of looked the other way when the Patriots showed us the “future” in last year’s Super Bowl as Sony Michel dominated. We assumed Michel would be the lead back all year and White would be a game script type of player. He wasn’t. ONCE AGAIN, White finished the season ranked tied for seventh place with an 80% consistency rating even though he was only ranked 18th for the year in total points. We’ll see what 2020 brings with many decisions to be made by Tom Brady and others on the Patriots. But if they all come back, then White surely has some value.

CLUTCH COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the running back that ended the 2016 season with a poor ranking in total Fantasy Points and consistency. However, in 2018, he had the greatest improvement in both categories making him very valuable to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Leonard Fournette

Fournette left a nasty taste in many Fantasy owner’s mouths in 2018. Whether it was injuries, bad attitude and/or bad play, Fournette’s 44% consistency in nine games, in addition to being ranked only 41st in total points, gave us every reason to not draft him in 2019. Well, we were wrong. Fournette quietly had a very impressive season of consistency with a 93% Clutch Rate, which tied him for third place. His total points ranked him seventh place as well. Which Fournette shows up in 2020? We hope it’s the 2019 version, but it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on.

CLUTCH MVP

This award goes to the running back that ended the 2018 with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Christian McCaffrey

For the second year in a row, McCaffrey wins the coveted MVP award for consistency. Last year, it was a tough decision between him, Zeke and Barkley. This year, it was NO CONTEST! McCaffrey had a year for the ages! He was ranked #1 in total points and was 158 POINTS ahead of second place! Yep, 158 points and that was with him only scoring only 7.30 Fantasy points in Week 2. He tied for first in consistency with a 94% Clutch Rate. Therefore, his xConsistency was 27.51 while second place was at 19.56. I’m sure McCaffrey was on many championship teams! He’s certainly a Top 3 pick in 2020, if not #1 overall.
