FANTASY FOOTBALL: 2019 Consistency Awards - QB

Bob Lung passes out the Consistency Awards to the quarterbacks for 2019 Fantasy Football season! How did your quarterbacks end up? Follow Bob @bob_lung.

The Fantasy Football season of 2019 is in the books and there were many Clutch quarterbacks and some, well, not so much. Therefore, in the heart of Awards season, it’s time to announce the 2019 Consistency Awards for the quarterbacks!

WORST VALUE

This award goes to the quarterback that had the highest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the worst combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making him the worst value at quarterback in 2019.

And the winner is….

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers has definitely had a Hall of Fame career, but the past couple of years have been very inconsistent. Last year, he was ranked seventh in total points but was only 56% consistent. So, there’s no way, he could worse, right? RIGHT? Well, Fantasy cheeseheads, he did. Everyone was expecting a bounce back season as his pre-season ADP was QB3, right behind Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. His overall ADP was pick 49 (early 5th round). The results in 2019 were horrendous. He was 11th in total points, but his 38% consistency had him ranked 26th overall. Whether it’s the offense, play-calling or old age, I would stay very far away from Aaron in 2020.

BEST VALUE

This award goes to the quarterback that had the lowest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making the best value at quarterback in 2019.

And the winner is….

Lamar Jackson

For the second year in a row, an relatively inexperience quarterback stepped into the starting role with very little hype and blew the doors off the Fantasy Football world! Last year, it was Patrick Mahomes. This year, it was Lamar Jackson. He had an ADP of QB13 and overall pick of 103. All he did was end the year ranked first in both total points (second was 58 pts behind) and consistency with a 93% Clutch Rate.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the rookie quarterback that had ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Kyler Murray

Well, if you’re the #1 overall pick in the NFL and you’re handed the starting role, it would make sense that you should be the rookie of the year. Kyler Murray did not disappoint. If you remember from the annual Rookies vs Consistency article, very few quarterbacks exceed a 60% Clutch Rate in their first year. However, Murray did exceed that mark with a 63% Clutch Rate and ended the year ranked seventh in total points. He will certainly be a QB1 pick for someone’s Fantasy team next year. However, he may be overhyped, so be careful.

CLUTCH-LESS

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the season with a high ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was lower than expected. Therefore, making him look more valuable (due to high points rank) than he was worth to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Russell Wilson

Wilson has an extreme habit of starting his Fantasy seasons slow. However, for the first time in FIVE years, Wilson started with three straight Clutch Games and went five for six in the first six games. In the past, Wilson would heat up after Week 5, but this year was the opposite. He only earned five more Clutch Games over the last 11 games and one of them was in Week 17. His pre-season ADP was QB8 and he did end the season ranked fourth in total points. However, his 56% Clutch Rate ranked him 16th for the year. In my opinion, he has definitely removed himself from my Top 5 list of quarterbacks heading into 2020.

CLUTCH-MORE

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the season with a low ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was higher than expected. Therefore, making him look less valuable (due to high points rank) to his Fantasy teams, when he was actually worth MORE!

And the winner is….

Ryan Tannehill

Tannehill could have certainly taken the Comeback Player of the Year, but I felt he deserved this one a little more. He became the starter in Week 7 and ended the year ranked 22nd in total points. However, his xConsistency rating ranked him seventh and his 75% Clutch Rating by going 9 for 12 left him ranked tied for third overall in consistency. As a full-time starter though, he went 9 for 10 (90%) over the last ten games. So, keep an eye on him as a potential mid-late round sleeper for 2020.

CLUTCH COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the 2018 season with a poor ranking in total Fantasy Points and consistency. However, in 2019, he had the greatest improvement in both categories making him very valuable to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Dak Prescott

This was a close race between Tannehill and Prescott. However, Prescott had such a great year overall that it’s hard to not give him this award. Prescott was an after-thought back-up in most 12 team leagues as his ADP was QB16. In 2018, Prescott had a 47% Clutch Rate and really hasn’t shown much consistency since his rookie season. Based on that alone, his 2019 numbers of a second place ranking in BOTH total points and consistency with an 81% Clutch Rate is an amazing comeback. Can he keep it going in 2020? I believe yes.

CLUTCH MVP

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the 2019 with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Lamar Jackson

Just like Patrick Mahomes in 2018, Jackson’s Fantasy season was about as perfect as it could get. He had only one blemish on his season in Week 5 against Pittsburgh. No worries, since his 93% was easily the #1 ranking at quarterback in addition to his #1 ranking in total points. He was 58 points AHEAD of Dak Prescott at #2 and Jackson missed Week 17 (on purpose). His xConsistency was also ranked #1 and was at 28.25 points while Dak in second place was 20.14. They were the only two quarterbacks even over 20 points. Jackson was the runaway MVP for Fantasy at quarterback.
