FANTASY FOOTBALL: 2018 Consistency Awards - QB

Bob Lung passes out the Consistency Awards to the quarterbacks for 2018 Fantasy Football season! How did your quarterbacks end up? Follow Bob @bob_lung.

The Fantasy Football season of 2018 is in the books and there were many Clutch quarterbacks and some, well, not so much. Therefore, in the heart of Awards season, it’s time to announce the 2018 Consistency Awards for the quarterbacks!

WORST VALUE

This award goes to the quarterback that had the highest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the worst combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making him the worst value at quarterback in 2018.

And the winner is….

Drew Brees

Brees had a down year in 2017 with a Clutch Rate of only 50%. Therefore, I wasn’t extremely high on him going into 2018. However, I did expect a slight increase. Well, that didn’t happen either. Now, most non-followers of the Consistency world, still ranked Brees pretty high as his ADP was QB6 and was drafted around overall pick 62 (so somewhere in the 5th round). Now that 2018 has ended, we see Brees ending the year ranked eighth in total Fantasy points, but his consistency dropped down to 47% this year. This ranked him 21st in Consistency for 2018. This hurt quite a few Fantasy owners in 2018, especially in the Fantasy playoffs (Weeks 13 thru 17) when he earned ZERO Clutch Games.

BEST VALUE

This award goes to the quarterback that had the lowest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making the best value at quarterback in 2018.

And the winner is….

Patrick Mahomes

This one isn’t even close! Patrick Mahomes was a ho-hum QB16, who some may have drafted as a backup quarterback in August, while others picked up off waivers after Week 1. All Mahomes did was completely dominate the entire Fantasy world with 482 Fantasy points (Matt Ryan was second with 417) and had a PERFECT 100% Consistency rate for the year!

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the rookie quarterback that had ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield was the #1 pick in the NFL draft, so you’d expect him to do well IF he ever got the start in Cleveland. Well, in a few short weeks, Mayfield took over and never looked back for the Browns and his fantasy owners. Mayfield ended the year with a 64% Clutch Rate. He is only the fifth rookie quarterback to earn over a 60% Clutch Rate in their first season. If you annualize his last eight games, Mayfield would have been ranked seventh in total points and had a 75% Clutch Rate. His ADP will certainly be much higher next season.

CLUTCH-LESS

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the season with a high ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was lower than expected. Therefore, making him look more valuable (due to high points rank) than he was worth to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Kirk Cousins

Many of you know I was always a big fan of Kirk Cousins in Washington and I was also pretty excited to see Cousins go to a high-powered offense like the Vikings. However, the consistency we loved in Washington just dissipated in Minnesota. He did end the year ranked ninth in total points, which was respectable as his ADP was QB9. However, his Consistency Rate of only 44% was pathetic! This ranked him 23rd for the year, which put him around quarterbacks like Andy Dalton and Mitch Trubisky. Don’t fall for the decent total points ranking with Cousins, just remember that terrible consistency ranking.

CLUTCH-MORE

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the season with a low ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was higher than expected. Therefore, making him look less valuable (due to high points rank) to his Fantasy teams, when he was actually worth MORE!

And the winner is….

Russell Wilson

We all have heard that Russell Wilson is a SLOW starter in Fantasy Football ever year. However, let me put some numbers to this REALITY! Wilson has earned the following number of Clutch Games in his first FIVE games over the past four years: 2, 2, 1, and 2. However, most seasons he is ranked in the Top 8 in Consistency at the end of the year. 2018 was no exception. He went 9 for 11 (82%) and finished with a 69% Clutch Rate, even though he only ranked 10th in total points. He’s certainly worth drafting every year, if you can start someone else in the first five weeks.

CLUTCH COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the 2017 season with a poor ranking in total Fantasy Points and consistency. However, in 2018, he had the greatest improvement in both categories making him very valuable to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Matt Ryan

This one even surprised me. After a horrendous 2017, where Ryan ended the year ranked 14th in total points and had a 50% Clutch Rate, which ranked him 19th in Consistency, his ADP was at QB14. He was certainly worth being drafted as a solid backup on your Fantasy team, but no one expected Ryan to finish the season ranked #2 overall in total Fantasy points and a 75% Clutch Rate, which also ranked him second! The Falcons OC was fired anyways, so we’ll see who Ryan will work with in 2019, but his value looks a little better heading into this year.

CLUTCH MVP

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the 2018 with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes was the run-away winner here! His domination in total points and perfect consistency was amazing and now he looks to be the #1 quarterback drafted next year. The real question will be what round will he go in? His xConsistency of 30.13 versus Matt Ryan’s second ranked xConsistency of 19.55 shows you how far ahead Mahomes is than any of the other quarterbacks. Will there be a sophomore slump for the kid? We’ll see. As of right now, it doesn’t look likely.

Thanks for joining us for the Consistency Awards at quarterback! Hopefully, these consistent players were on your teams!
