Nease’s Insights—Week 16: Most Valuable Players Quest

As the season winds down, we have good memories and some not so good. As we talked about before the season started, in fantasy football, in a 12-team league, 92% of the teams are ultimately losers. There is only one champion.

There are so many players that could be considered our fantasy MVP, QB Patrick Mahomes or RBs Ezekiel Elliott and Todd Gurley, just to name a few obvious choices.

I was all set to rattle off some names and stats here, but, quite frankly, this is not the time, nor the place. Quite frankly, I think you and also me are tired of all that stuff. I am 69 and next year will be my 35th season of playing. This year has been great—five of six teams in the playoffs and I have three teams in fantasy bowls.

One does not win championships in highly competitive leagues like this very often, so being in three fantasy bowls is incredible. Win or lose, this has been my best year in fantasy football ever.

Fantasy football got it’s start back in the 1960s. When my buddy Jim and I started our dynasty league back in 1985, our game was in its infancy. Hardly anyone played it and nobody really talked about it. There were few resources and we made our rules from scratch, It is a fun, highly competitive league and most of us have been in it from the beginning, or at least the last 25 years.

When the computer age took off, fantasy football popularity soared as well. Since 1985, I have witnessed a growth in our game that has been exponential. Millions of people, all around the world, are playing.

In these troubled days, it is a welcome respite from a world filled with hate and in a nation divided by a growing unrest. Every year the number a people playing fantasy football grows. Like an oasis in the desert. People are drawn to the game because it is not only a challenge to master and highly competitive, but it is plain out fun.

We like to beat other people and the feeling that our game gives are a source of exhilaration. Many of us play for $$, but the bragging rights themselves are priceless. As the NFL player pool changes from season-to-season, so does our game. It is never the same from one year to the next. With countless playing variations, it is both a dynamic and unique form of personal indulgence that captivates our attention and helps us pass our time for much of the year.

But the game would not exist without you and you and you. The people, old and young, and men and women, that play fantasy football are the true MVPs of our game. The football players are like chess pieces that we move around a board as we compete to be the best. Like the Bruce Springsteen song Glory Days, we like to rekindle the athletic highs from our younger days both real and in some cases, a tad exaggerated. It gives us a second chance to shine and to win. While we are beaten down in so many ways in our lives, fantasy football is like a drug for the masses. Yet, without you that play the game and are fans of the NFL teams and players, football would just be another sport we watch casually. We would lose a part of our lives we cherish.

So, let’s raise our glasses and toast ourselves. We are the MVPs of fantasy football. We are the collective force that keeps our beloved game alive and prosperous.
