Well, here we are, at the brink of the playoffs. Over the course of 2018, we have watched the Combine in Indy, sweated over where the stars would wind up in free agency and marveled at the 2018 draft. As we studied the player pool, everyone’s fantasy potential was weighed like we were conducting a scientific study. Most of us prepare more for fantasy football than we ever did for any exam, back in the days where we were pretending to be scholars in the world of academia.
Over the next few months, we weighed the opinions of countless “experts”. Some of whom knew what they were talking about, but there were also many who were pretty much clueless. We learned that Jerick McKinnon, no more than a Theo Riddick type player his entire career, was now a stud and was more valuable than Christian McCaffrey. I laughed and said no way, but everyone thought I was crazy. Look at McCaffrey now.
I am in six leagues, all played on the MFL platform. Here is how I have done thus far:
- Home league-dynasty: 10-3 and in playoffs
- My Couch Tomatoes League—24-team, 2-conference auction league—12=1 and #1 seed going into the playoffs.
- FanEx Experts’ League (representing BGFS); 7-6 tied for division lead with one game to go against the team I am tied with. A win in Week 14 puts me in the playoffs.
- FanEx Experts’ Auction League (representing BGFS): 5-8 and out of the playoffs, with one game remaining in Week 14. This was my only league that my team was not playoff worthy.
- FF WebMasters Experts’ League (representing ASL): 12-1 and #1 seed going into the -playoffs.
- Big Guy Fantasy Sports VIP League: 7-6 and in the playoffs. Came back from a 2-5 start to make playoffs with a Week 13 win.
Let’s sum this up:
- Overall record is 53-25.
- The CT, FanEx and FFWM teams are all #1 in the respective league power ratings.
- The CT and FFWM teams are the leading scoring teams in their leagues by a wide margin.
I’ve been playing since 1985 and this has been my best season ever. Last year was very good, with three playoff teams, but this year I have four teams in, plus the possibility of one more with a win in Week 14.
All year long I have taken you step-by-step on how to win like this yourselves. Yes, there is indeed a method to my madness. LOL
Many years ago, I met Bob Lung, who owns Big Guy Fantasy Sports. This is my second season writing with him. I started out writing in 2000 with Mike Nazarek at FFMastermind. I joined Fantasy Insights (the 1st privately-owned fantasy football site on the internet—founded in 1994. It was owned by Jim Lenz, who along with Mike Nazarek are industry pioneers. Dish Adams bought Fantasy Insights from Jim Lenz. A few years ago. Tony Holm and his Fantasy Sharks site bought out Fantasy Insights. I have also written for Advanced Sports Logic over the last year.
I don’t have a unique secret to winning. Over the 34 seasons I have played and the 18 years I have written, I have had the honor and privilege to work with and know many of the great minds in the fantasy football industry.
In competition, I have held my own when playing against them. They have had a big influence on how I play the game and how, I in turn, suggest that you play. This is not an exact science. All we can do is draw from the knowledge on hand and make our best decision based on that.
I have learned from Bob Lung that the “CONSISTENCY THEORY” he has developed over the years is a key in evaluating players to draft. I will not repeat my arguments here, but is way more insightful than ADP. I give full credit to my success this season to adding a consistency evaluation to my personal draft preparation. I build my own draft rankings and really am not concerned what others think. After my 2018 drafts, I was told for all six teams, that the online “rate my team” methods said all my teams would do horribly. Actually, I will take a 68% overall winning percentage any year.
This is the time of year we all are going for the prize we set out to win a few months ago. If you got this far, you know what to do. Keep doing what you have been all season. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Next season, when you think back on 2018, savor the victory if you win the championship. But even if you don’t, remember the journey. Recall the joys of going through the analysis, draft and playing out the regular season just ended. Think about how exciting each and every week has been. The NFL games themselves have undergone a not so subtle transformation to being a wide-open offensive game, with just enough defense thrown in to keep things balanced.
Your fate is now in the hands of the fantasy football gods. All you can do is the best you can. Yeah, that sounds corny, but it is the truth. Just gather all the data available, stay knowledgeable and make the best decisions you are able to.
As we near the end of our championship journeys, while our opponents fall one by one, keep focused. The bragging rights from winning are timeless and priceless. If you can win some $$$, all the better. Keep your eyes on the prize. Get out there and kick some ass!
Ask the Experts
When my friend Andy Richardson invited me to provide material for his weekly Fantasy Index Thursday morning "Ask the Experts" column, I was thrilled and honored. Here is the December 6, 2018 article from our friends at Fantasy Index. Check out all our comments this week as we answer the question: “On the eve of the fantasy playoffs in most leagues, what is one piece of strategic advice you would give a friend before they set their lineups?”
Bring on those playoffs! All of us at Big Guy Fantasy Sports are intent on helping you become the champions you want to be. With our poignant articles and being the home base for the consistency theory, a sound, mathematically-based alternative to ADP, we will be with you for the 2018 season in its entirety. What happens then? That my friends, is easy. We start over and do it all again in 2019!
Good luck! Have fun!
