Ron Rigney and Colby Conway are part of a multi-sit NFL Mock Draft and gives you their breakdown on who they believe the Chargers should pick with Pick 1.17!
Welcome to the 2018 NFL Mock Draft! We have joined together with writers from a handful of other fantasy sports websites to preview the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, from the viewpoint of how these picks will affect Fantasy Football owners. The mock draft is a slow draft, and we’ll be updating all of the picks here. You can follow it right here!
Ron Rigney and Colby Conway choose at Pick 1.17 for the Los Angeles Chargers:
Da’Ron Payne - DT - Alabama
For a team that finished 2017 allowing the second most yards per carry (4.9 ypc) and the second most rushing yards per game (131.1) in the league, getting the top run stuffer in the draft is a no-brainer. Alabama DT Da’Ron Payne will be a welcome addition to the Chargers’ defensive front and should step in and immediately be in impact player. At 6’2” 311 lbs, he is a load, even though he appears smaller on film, mostly due to his athletic ability. In his final season at Alabama Payne earned All-SEC honors, recording 53 tackles, a sack, an interception, and three passes defended. The knock on him is his ability to pass rush from the interior, even though he recorded 27 pressures last season. There is no question about his run stopping ability, but after watching his film and combine workouts, I believe he can be an effective pass rusher at the next level as well. He won’t be recording double digit sack seasons, but it will be enough to pair with his run stuffing prowess and make him into a Pro Bowl caliber player for very long time.
