Welcome to the Consistency Check-in! Each week Ron Rigney will highlight players at each position that either barely recorded a Clutch Game, or fell just short. Are they must adds, or must drops? Players who could see a consistency bump
Justin Fields, QB – CHI
If you’ve been paying attention to the Consistency football podcast, I mentioned Justin Fields was ready to go on a bit of a Clutch Game run. The Bears’ QB faced some defenses that appealed to his skill set, even if he isn’t throwing the ball a ton. Heading into Week 9, Fields has put together three straight Clutch Games. It’s no secret that his value comes from his legs, and over the last three weeks, Fields has averaged 76 yards rushing and has two rushing scores. His pitch count in the passing game seems to hover around 20 attempts each week, and based on that number he hasn’t been bad and has shown improvement over the course of the season. The Bears added Chase Claypool at the deadline to boost the WR corps that was badly in need of help. Say what you want about Claypool, but this should boost the passing game a bit in Chicago. Combine that with the Bears dealing their two best defensive players and making their defense much worse, and the Bears are going to have to throw more. It would make sense with their season yet again heading nowhere, to let Fields get some more opportunities. He also faces Miami, Detroit, and Atlanta in the next three weeks. I see some more Clutch Games in his future.
