When I first learned about Bob Lung’s idea of consistency as a tool to help you play fantasy football, I loved his draft list, which helps you craft a rock-solid, consistent team. That’s all I initially used consistency for. After my draft, I didn’t look at in-season consistency. I have recently come around to the idea that monitoring players’ consistency throughout the season can be a very useful tool.
During week one, so many stalwarts in our consistency hall of fame let us down. Ja’Marr and Drake London were two of the most painful ones for their owners. Matthew Stafford has a little excuse because he had too many Vegemite sandwiches in Australia. Drake Maye and Baker Mayfield have no such convenient excuse for not showing up in week 1. Much to the joy of Kyle Pitts truthers, me included, he had his big breakout last year. Then, in 2026, in week one, he showed up with one of his early-career showings. I hope someone with the Falcons will point Kyle out to Cooper Rush.
As I said, in the past, these ups and downs with our consistency stalwarts would usually make me roll my eyes in disgust. Now I recognize these vacillations as consistency opportunities; weapons to use against our competitors in our leagues. See that ad for the Consistency Tools? Now is when our consistency knowledge can have the biggest impact. Early in the season, when a player that was really good last season gets off to a slow start, look at their consistency history. Most players gravitate back to their mean, whether it’s higher or lower, and you can use that knowledge if a league mate drops a good player after one or two tepid games. Or, in every league, there’s that guy, or gal, or both, who just loves to trade. They always want to fix a bad week by getting a new player for the next week. Am I suggesting that we should fleece our less informed league-mates for our own benefit? Heck yeah! If you can give them a two-for-one deal with you sending them a one-game wonder for two high performers that start the season a little inconsistently, it’s your responsibility to teach those idiots a lesson!
