The wait is over. Week 1 of the NFL season is here, and it’s time to make those tough fantasy calls. Every roster has question marks, but the right start or sit can set the tone for your season. Let’s break down some of the biggest Week 1 decisions across all positions.
Quarterback Calls
Brock Purdy is flying under the radar, but he belongs in starting lineups. His consistency and control of the offense make him a sneaky safe play. On the flip side, Jared Goff faces a tougher matchup and may be better left on the bench this week.
Deeper leagues may want to take a chance on J.J. McCarthy. He has weapons around him and just enough upside to deliver a surprise performance in Week 1.
Running Back Decisions
Christian McCaffrey is too good to bench if he plays, but he’s risky. With a potential calf injury, he may miss this week. Tony Pollard also draws a difficult defense in Week 1, which lowers his ceiling.
Rhamondre Stevenson is a question mark, as his workload with TreVeyon Henderson isn’t fully clear. Meanwhile, James Cook looks like a solid start with a chance for meaningful touches in a high-scoring game. Kenneth Walker brings risk and reward — his health seems better, but Zach Charbonnet is there.
Wide Receiver Choices
Calvin Ridley steps into his WR1 role with confidence now that he has Cam Ward at QB. Temper expectations against Denver this week, but he’s got a good outlook for the season. Jayden Reed, however, is battling injury concerns that could limit him.
Adam Thielne offers sleeper upside in Minnesota’s offense, while Terry McLaurin is another risky play due to missing training camp during a holdout. Emeka Egbuka brings some real rookie excitement and could reward managers bold enough to start him this week.
Tight End Outlook
Kyle Pitts continues to frustrate managers with inconsistency. He’s a risky start unless you’re still betting on a breakout. Tyler Warren, though a rookie, could make an immediate splash and is worth a look in Week 1.
Mark Andrews is the safest option in the group. His steady role makes him a strong start in fantasy lineups.
Defenses and Final Notes
The Denver Broncos’ defense is set up for a strong start and should be plugged in wherever possible. The Browns’ defense, however, is less reliable and carries more risk in the first week.
The key to success in Week 1 is striking a balance between safe plays and high upside. Surprises are guaranteed, but with the right start/sit choices, you’ll be ready to capitalize. And remember, this is only the first step in the journey — waiver wire moves and consistency updates are coming every week.
