Wide Receiver Age Cliff in Fantasy: Is it real?

Every year in fantasy football, we see players at certain ages written off. This year is no different. With older running backs having a great season last year, it made me wonder. Is the wide receiver age cliff a real thing?

There are arbitrary ages for each position in fantasy football that managers hold to. Once players reach those ages, they hit the dreaded “age cliff” and their production declines. For wide receivers, that number is thought to be 30.

I examined a handful of fantasy wide receivers for the 2025 season to see if we can expect declining results based on their age. Each of the wide receivers has been at least relevant, if not a high-end WR1, during their careers.

I chose to focus on a couple of the top ADP (average draft position) wide receivers who are considered at the cliff. Stefon Diggs NE – ADP WR37 – 99.4 Overall

The Patriots brought in Stefon Diggs in the offseason to be their WR1. He’s currently 31 years old and will be 32 in December. He applies to the wide receiver age cliff, and he even faces the challenge of a new team. Add to that the fact that he’s coming off a major knee injury that limited him to 8 games last season, and the situation is daunting.

In the 8 games that Diggs was able to play in, he managed a 75% Clutch Rate (CR). He was also averaging 15.2 points per game at the time of his injury. That placed him at WR18 in points per game ahead of guys like Ladd McConkey (15.1), Jaxon Smith-Njigba (14.9), and Garrett Wilson (14.8).

Diggs was able to be a WR2 for fantasy purposes despite battling for targets with Nico Collins and Tank Dell in Houston. As mentioned, he was brought in to New England to be the WR1. With new Head Coach Mike Vrabel and new Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels, the expectation is that Diggs will be peppered with targets early and often.

I believe the biggest concern is the injury, but Diggs has been practicing in full since the beginning of camp. In 2023, Keenan Allen had 108 receptions, 1,243 receiving yards, and 7 receiving touchdowns in his 31-year-old season. VERDICT: Diggs is currently being drafted as a WR4, which is way too low. He’s capable of a WR2 season and is one of the better draft values in the 8th round.

Tyreek Hill MIA: ADP WR12 – 30.5 Overall

The Miami Dolphins seem to be having some internal issues. Recently, we’ve heard reports of Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa having a “work in progress” relationship. Hill is 31 years old and has mostly been known as a speed receiver for his career.

Last season, Hill’s fantasy value plummeted. His WR33 finish in points per game (12.8 PPG) was his lowest since his rookie season, when he also finished as WR33 (12.4 PPG). Across the board all of his metrics were down last season; 3rd lowest yards per reception (11.8), lowest total touchdowns (6), 2nd lowest yards per game (56.4), tied for his lowest receptions per game (4.8), and it was the 1st time in 5 years that he had less than 100 touches (89).

Considered a down year all-around for Hill, he still managed a 59% CR. He played in all 17 games, which led to a finish as the WR18 overall. His pedigree has been one of the best wide receivers in the game. As a speed receiver, he may not age as well as others.

Hill has several things going against him for this upcoming season, yet fantasy managers are still drafting him as the WR12. It’s hard to ignore the back-to-back 1,700+ yard seasons, but his game doesn’t translate as well as other, better, route-running experts like Allen and Diggs. VERDICT: With all the surrounding baggage and the wide receiver age cliff, I can’t pull the trigger on Hill in the late 2nd or early 3rd round. In every draft I’m in, someone else does so, I don’t think I’ll have any shares of him this season.

Davante Adams GB: ADP WR14/35.8 Overall

The Los Angeles Rams let another wide receiver age cliff candidate, Cooper Kupp (32), leave town, only to bring in Davante Adams. Adams is 32 years old (he’ll be 33 in December). Adams, like Diggs, is on a new team at his age, but he’s not coming off a major injury.

This will be his first season where he isn’t paired with either Aaron Rodgers (his QB for most of his career) or Derek Carr, his QB and close friend from college. His new QB1, Matthew Stafford, has also been missing from camp due to a back injury. This leaves Jimmy Garoppolo as the de facto QB1 for the Rams. Adams, while in Las Vegas, was vocal about not enjoying playing with Garoppolo.

Last season, Adams was tied for WR10 in points per game (17.2 PPG). His consistency was good as well; he had a 64% CR for the season. In seasons where he’s played 14 or more games, Adams hasn’t finished worse than WR14 since his second season in 2015. He’ll face target competition this upcoming season from Puka Nacua, who finished as WR3 in points per game last season (18.8 PPG).

Adams is much more physical, and his ability to get open using his skill has served him well. For him to hit his WR14 draft spot, he needs 140+ targets. The WR2 for the Rams last season, Kupp, had 100 targets in 12 games, or 8.33 per game. That comes out to 141.67 over 17 games.  VERDICT: Adams is in between for me. I feel like WR14 is closer to his ceiling if everything goes right. I won’t avoid him, but at the end of the 3rd round, I like other guys a little more than him (James Cook, George Kittle, and Alvin Kamara).

Calvin Ridley TEN: ADP WR27/73.6 Overall  Wide Receiver Age Cliff.

The Tennessee Titans selected Cam Ward as the number 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. His WR1 for this upcoming season will be Calvin Ridley, who’s 30 years old (will be 31 in December).

Last season, the Titans endured some of the worst quarterback play in the league. Ward is an upgrade. Optimism is high, the connection between Ward and Ridley “…could be potentially deadly,” according to John Frascella on X.

Ridley has back-to-back 1,000+ yard seasons and finished last season with a 47% CR. Ridley averaged 11.7 points per game, which tied him for WR40 with George Pickens. He was WR28 in points per game in 2023 (13.5 PPG).

Ward will undoubtedly be better than Levis and Rudolph were last season. The only real target competition for Ridley is fellow age-cliffer Tyler Lockett (who’s 32). Unproven talent (rookies Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike) and journeyman Van Jefferson fill out the rest of the receiving room. VERDICT: I like Ward a lot, and like Adams, I think this is close to Ridley’s ceiling. Closing the gap for Ridley between WR40 and WR27 is a tall task for Ward, but without legit target competition, I think Ridley is a good value in the 6th round.

The wide receiver age cliff is more attributed to situations than age. Each wide receiver, despite their age, can find success even past age 30!
