Deebo Samuel came to the 49ers early in the offseason with trade demands. Wish granted! Samuel finds himself headed to the NFC East after he was dealt to Washington for a fifth-round pick. It appears the ‘Niners wanted Deebo moved as much as he wanted to go, with their willingness to take a $31 million dead cap hit for the 2025 season to trade him. Let’s see how this impacts the fantasy landscape.
Samuel comes off a disappointing 2024 season for fantasy owners with just 51 catches for 670 yards. He was equally as disappointing on the ground, averaging just 3.2 YPC with 42 rushes for 136 yards. Deebo was just 40% consistent and tallied just four total touchdowns. Not what you’re looking for from one of the top wideouts on your fantasy squad. He did miss two games, but missing at least a couple of games has become the norm for Samuel owners.

No matter the sport, I’m a firm believer that a change of scenery is a positive for a player. The ‘Niners have been solid for the past few seasons but seem to have hit a bit of a wall with the current roster. The vibe in Washington is optimistic after reaching the NFC Championship game with a dynamic new QB. Kliff Kingsbury returns for his second season as the OC.
If anyone can get the most out of Deebo, it’s him. His spread attack focuses on a quick tempo and creating matchups to exploit defenses. Samuel’s ability to line up wide and in the backfield fits well with his concept. Lining up opposite BGFS favorite Terry “Targets” McLaurin should help as well (as long as the contract negotiations go well). There’s no better way to help your young QB than surrounding him with weapons. Washington has done just that.

I don’t see a lot of negatives with this, but it could take a few carries away from Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler. It doesn’t stand to have a huge impact, but it could be there.
Overall, I’m usually not a big Samuel guy, but I’m in on him more than usual. Yes, he gets hurt, and if you draft him, have a proper replacement. His current ADP of 69 (nice) and WR 39 is affordable and puts him as your WR3 in most leagues. The offense should play to Samuel’s strengths, and he is in store for a bounce-back 2025 season.
