Is Commanders’ Deebo Samuel and his NFL fantasy football outlook looking risky due to his consistency?
One of the hottest offseason moves was Deebo Samuel‘s trade to the Washington Commanders. He’s also now one of the most polarizing players we’ll have to decide on in drafts. If you only consider Deebo based on last season, I wouldn’t blame you for steering clear of him. His consistency rating was only 40%, and boy, did the Niners want to get rid of him. They only got a 5th-round pick and are still paying Deebo 17.5 million dollars while he’s playing for the Commanders.
That should be a red flag for fantasy drafters, but…
I’m going to suggest drafting Deebo and hopefully get you a bargain on a player who will outperform his draft spot. Let’s take a look at his recent consistency:
2024: He battled through injuries and pneumonia, missing games all season. His clutch rate and clutch games were abysmal.
2023: 75% of his games were clutch games, and his clutch rate was 67%.
2022: Dude was off the hook. He played 16 games, and his clutch rate was 94%. He ranked #4 on the season.
2021: He had 1405 receiving yards, 6 receiving TDs, 365 rushing yards, and 8 TDs.

Three of the last four years, Deebo was consistently consistent. But we have no idea how the Commanders will use him. Were they just looking for a credible #2 receiver, or are they going to deploy him as a football Swiss army knife? I think it’s the latter. In Arizona, Kliff Kingsbury often used pre-snap motion with receivers moving into the backfield for potential hand-offs or jet sweeps that leverage their speed. He often used Rondale Moore this way.
In addition to an OC that’s likely to make use of Deebo’s unique talents, we also have Deebo himself. Like most of my picks, he’s a guy who’s out to prove himself. He’s a diva wide receiver looking to get his career back in the spotlight and land another big contract. He has appeared at mini-camp in fantastic shape and saying all the cocky things you’d expect. Oh, and by the way, I think he might have an upgrade at the QB position.
According to FantasyPros, in a full PPR league, he’s going as WR 38 at draft spot 79, which is round 7. Like most of my recommendations, he’s not going to be your WR1 or WR2, but if you can grab him in round 6, you’re getting great value and potential from a guy that can produce very good, consistent stats in the right offense. My prediction is that Deebo will be a down-low fantasy hero. Now I’m outta rhymes, draft Deebo for good times.
