Should we rethink Justin Fields as an option in Fantasy Football drafts since he landed in New York City?
After a season of splitting the QB duties in Pittsburgh, Justin Fields found a new home in New York. Barring a catastrophic change of events, Fields slots in as the QB1 for the Jets, with Tyrod Taylor as his only competition for the spot. Is he worth a look as the starter on your squad?

At just 25, the former number one overall pick has never been short on athletic ability. When you look at his career numbers, there are some impressive ones. In 2022, Fields finished with 1143 yards and 8 rushing TDs. RB1 numbers from a QB? I think we’d all take that. Last season, Fields completed 65.8% of his passes, which was a career high. He was 4-2 as a starter and threw just one pick in those games. Sounds encouraging, right? Not so fast, my friend!
From a consistency standpoint, Fields recorded just 3 clutch games out of 10 appearances (six starts). His yards per attempt were 4.7, which was a career low. Fields has always taken too many sacks. His sack% of 9.08 was also a career low, but still much higher than we want from a fantasy starter.
The Jets’ depth chart tips its hand as far as what they will look to do on that side of the ball. Tanner Engstrand follows Aaron Glenn to New York by way of the Detroit Lions. Engstrand saw success as the Lions’ pass game coordinator. From a passing standpoint, the first-year OC is going to have his work cut out for him. The Jets have worked to beef up the offensive line and have a workhorse back in Breece Hall. Take a look at the WR depth chart, and it’s Garrett Wilson and some dudes. It stands to reason that Wilson will be a target monster. If he goes down, it gets ugly. This offense will run early and often. This bodes well for fantasy owners as Fields is known for his rushing stats.

Players This Will Help:
- Justin Fields – I know the article is about him, but this sets up well for him to regain his ability to run. We should see some packages showcasing this.
- Garrett Wilson – I don’t know if it’s more of the acquisition of Fields or the lack of WR additions, but Fields will look to Wilson constantly.
Players This Will Hurt:
- Garrett Wilson – Targets are great, but being able to play the QB position is another story.
Pass Or Smash?
Overall, it’s going to be a hard pass for me in anything other than superflex or 2QB leagues. I don’t see much that makes me any more confident in Fields as a QB. That said, the potential bump in rushing numbers is encouraging. His current ADP of pick 149 overall and Round 13 pick 5 isn’t expensive, so it’s a minimal investment, but one I’m not likely to take.
