The Biggest Reason You Want To Draft Nick Chubb This Year!

 “Why Isn’t Nick Chubb Done For Yet? And Still A Fantasy Football Manager’s Next Best Running Back/Sledgehammer, to only Derrick Henry!”

Just so you know, I hate myself for writing this. I feel like I’ll need to swim in a hot tub full of hand sanitizer just to get rid of the oogy feeling from recommending Nick Chubb. I’m also psychic, and I know what you’re thinking: “Nick Chubb? Are you serious, Phil? He doesn’t have a team yet, and he’s coming off two lost seasons due to injuries.”

Until 2023, Nick Chubb was one of the most consistent RBs in the history of fantasy football, averaging over 5 ypc for six consecutive years. He’s only 29 and has less mileage on him than you think. He only logged 130 carries in the last two years. He also has one of my favorite attributes: He runs angry. It’s hard to measure, but if there were a consistency ranking for running backs who are a danger to themselves and others, Nick Chubb is second on that list to only behind Derrick Henry.

Speaking of Derrick Henry, remember 2023 when he only had 23 rushing attempts? How did his 2024 turn out? Nick Chubb is similar to Derrick Henry in running style and body type. They are both big, bruising, thick-bodied guys. They are sledgehammers. And they are also built to take a beating. Or more accurately, they are built to give out beatings. They are similar to Adrian Peterson, who had a 2000-yard season after he had a knee injury similar to Nick Chubb. I’m not saying Nick Chubb is going to run for 2000 yards, but I am saying that a good season is possible.

If you’re here for the consistency, here it is: In his last two games last season averaged 4.5 YPC against the rugged Chiefs and Steelers defenses. At that point in the season, the Browns’ offense was so putrid that opponents didn’t even play pass defense, and with nothing to play for, Nick Chubb was still getting his. We all saw the video this time last year when Nick, coming off of the ACL/MCL injury, was squatting the equivalent of a firetruck. When you look at consistency, don’t pick and choose the numbers you like.  Look at the whole picture. When you look at Nick Chubb’s career, the consistency is his trademark. The injuries are the aberrations.

Look, I’m not saying to draft Nick Chubb anywhere in the first ten rounds, but after that, he might be a steal as your RB 4 or maybe even three. He’s not signed yet, and there are several teams out there that need an RB with the potential to carry their running game. When Bye-mageddon weeks come and you’re scouring the waiver wire for a Justice Hill level player, wouldn’t it be better to have a guy who’s the hammer when his team is on the one-yard line? Right now, he’s going in drafts, if he goes at all, as the RB 64. He’s basically free, and I think he’s worth a roll of the dice.
