2016 - Clutch Awards - TE

The Fantasy Football season of 2016 is in the books and there were many Clutch tight ends and some, well, not so much. Therefore, in the heart of Awards season, it’s time to announce the 2016 Clutch Awards for the Tight Ends!

WORST VALUE

This award goes to the Tight End that had the highest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the worst combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making him the worst value at tight end in 2016.

And the winner is….

Coby Fleener

Coby was the “darling” of the pre-season tabloids! After leaving the Colts in free agency and taking his talents to South Louisiana, Fleener was destined for greatness in New Orleans. Heck, even Ben Watson was a consistent stud the year before! Fleener’s ADP leading up to most Fantasy drafts was TE6 or higher.

However, Fleener and Drew Brees never “clicked” and Fleener ended the season ranked 15th in total points and had a 31% Clutch Rating. This ranked him 32nd in consistency. Needless to say, he failed many Fantasy owners in 2016 and was easily the Worst Value at the tight end position.

BEST VALUE

This award goes to the Tight End that had the lowest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making the best value at tight end in 2016.

And the winner is….

Kyle Rudolph

Kyle has never really been very consistent over his career. He usually hovered around the 35% - 50% range. Due to his past inconsistency, his pre-season ADP was around the TE20-TE22 mark. He probably wasn’t drafted in most leagues unless they required a backup tight end.

However, the season-ending injury to Teddy Bridgewater, opened the door for Sam Bradford to be traded to the Vikings and the “love affair” began! Rudolph ended the ranked second in total points and tied for first place in consistency with a 75% Clutch Rating! This made it very easy to pick him as the Best Value in 2016 at Tight End.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the rookie Tight End that had ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Hunter Henry

Hunter wasn’t particularly great or consistent, but he was the best rookie tight end in 2016. Henry ended the season ranked 17th in total points over his 14 games played. His consistency was decent for a rookie, as he earned a 50% Clutch Rating, which ranked him tied for 14th overall. If Antonio Gates retires in the off-season, he could be a great value come draft time!

CLUTCH-LESS

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the season with a high ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was lower than expected. Therefore, making him look more valuable (due to high points rank) than he was worth to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Jason Witten

Jason has always been one of my favorite players. In the past, he was always very consistent. He usually ended up in the Top 6-10 in consistency every year with Tony Romo at the controls. However, this year, the consistency was there with Dak Prescott at quarterback.

Jason ended 2016 ranked 11th in total points, but only had a 44% Clutch Rating. This left him ranked tied for 19th in consistency. With the future of the Cowboys looking more like Prescott and less like Romo. Witten’s consistency days may be riding off into the sunset.

CLUTCH-MORE

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the season with a low ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was higher than expected. Therefore, making him look less valuable (due to high points rank) to his Fantasy teams, when he was actually worth MORE!

And the winner is….

Jordan Reed

Health was the only thing standing in Jordan Reed’s way of being the #1 tight end in BOTH total points AND consistency. He only played 12 games in 2016 and therefore, his total points ranking was only ninth place. However, his Clutch Rating tied for first place with Kyle Rudolph at 75%! If he can stay healthy in 2017, his consistency should remain one of the best!

CLUTCH COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the 2015 season with a poor ranking in total Fantasy Points and consistency. However, in 2016, he had the greatest improvement in both categories making him very valuable to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Jimmy Graham

Oh Jimmy, what a horrible 2015 you had! The transition to Seattle was supposed to be “seamless” for Fantasy owners, but it was horrific! Graham ended 2015 ranked 20th in total points and had a 45% Clutch Rating for 17th place in consistency.

But, 2016 was an almost complete turnaround for Graham! He regained his consistency prowess this past year with a total points ranking of fourth place and a Clutch Rating of 63%, which tied him for third place! Now, that my friends, is a comeback!

CLUTCH MVP

This award goes to the Tight End that ended the 2016 with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Kyle Rudolph

If there was a pre-season prediction party, no one would have picked Kyle Rudolph to be the best Fantasy tight end of 2016. His total points ranking of second place combined with his tied for first place ranking in consistency with a 75% Clutch Rating was pretty damn impressive! Congrats to Kyle and nest of luck in 2017! Do I expect a repeat? Well, we’ll see if Teddy Bridgewater can see the value in Rudolph’s size and hands to make him the weapon he should be in that offense. If he does, then yes, he’ll back in the Top 5 again in 2017.
