Consistently Clutch - QB

Bob Lung highlights those Fantasy football players who are not only Clutch, but Consistently Clutch. Follow him @bob_lung

Aaron Rodgers leads the quarterbacks over the past three seasons. However, only Drew Brees has earned the honored, Triple Double, with three straight seasons of double-figure Clutch Games.

It’s one thing to be clutch during one season in Fantasy Football. However, it’s those players who are consistently clutch that make up the real Fantasy studs. These players are the ones that should be drafted in the early rounds of most drafts. A consistently clutch player has normally remained consistently healthy as well, which is just as important as their consistent performance.

The Top 24 most consistent quarterbacks and the number of Clutch Games earned each year are listed below. They start at the horribly inconsistent, Colin Kaepernick and end with the most consistent quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.

The Top 24 is divided into three tiers with a three-year and two-year totals and associated rank. I’ll analyze each tier and provide some insight on the players within that tier.

These four quarterbacks are definitely in a class by themselves. Yes, I know that Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan and others are “close” to them in Clutch Games. But are they, really? Tom Brady missed four games last year due to deflated balls and Andrew Luck missed half of 2015 due to injury. If Brady and Luck played all 16 games in those seasons, it’s really not that close. If you can draft any of these four in your 2017 drafts, around the fourth or fifth round, you will have consistency on your side. I would highly recommend it. All of them are capable of 12+ Clutch Games in any given season. I can’t guarantee that for the other quarterbacks in Tier’s Two and Three.

This tier is made up of quarterbacks who have the “potential” to earn double-digit Clutch Games in a season. In fact, if you look at the list of quarterbacks, in this tier, you will see eight out of the eleven earned double-digit Clutch Games, at least once over the past three seasons. However, in the other years, they failed miserably. No one failed as bad as Russell Wilson last season. After “appearing” that he was going to join the elite crowd in Fantasy quarterbacks, Wilson earned only seven Clutch Games and destroyed many Fantasy teams in 2016. The loss of a running game and a porous offensive line were much of the contributing factors, but Wilson looked lost at times last year. I believe there some room for improvement in 2017, but I’ll probably stay clear from him just to be safe.

There are some of these quarterbacks that I believe can regain double-digit consistency in 2017. I’ll start with Matt Ryan. He truly figured it out last season. By not focusing on Julio Jones on every passing play, his Falcons and his consistency could be more successful. This was Ryan’s most consistent season ever and that was with Julio Jones only catching six touchdowns! The team remained intact in the offseason and Ryan should stay consistent again in 2017. Kirk Cousins was my “man-crush” heading into 2016 and he delivered with a very consistent season (11 Clutch Games). Don’t worry about him losing DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, he’ll be just fine. I assume there won’t be many believers in 2017, but he should be very focused to earn that big contract in 2018, so grab him as your backup or a late-round starter.

Most of these quarterbacks barely hover around the average level. However, there are two quarterbacks in this group, that I believe have the ability to earn double-digit Clutch Games in 2017 and will be in Tier Two next season for sure. Let’s start with the only quarterback who has earned double-digit Clutch Games, Marcus Mariota. Mariota missed one game in 2016, so he could have been better. However, Mariota accomplished this with an excellent running game in Tennessee. I would expect him to continue that consistency in 2017 and finish as a Top 12 quarterback.

Derek Carr is easily the second quarterback with potential to earn double-digit Clutch Games in 2017. He was well on his way in 2016 to double-digit Clutch Games when an injury ended his season. He will be a Top 12 Fantasy quarterback in 2017 as well, just don’t overpay for him. I’m a tad worried about his ADP being too high heading into August.

There are your most consistent quarterbacks over the past three seasons. Keep this information handy as you prepare for your drafts this season. Clutch is good but consistently clutch is great!
