2016 - Clutch Awards - QB

The Fantasy Football season of 2016 is in the books and there were many Clutch quarterbacks and some, well, not so much. Therefore, in the heart of Awards season, it’s time to announce the 2016 Clutch Awards for the quarterbacks!

WORST VALUE

This award goes to the quarterback that had the highest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the worst combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making him the worst value at quarterback in 2016.

And the winner is….

Cam Newton

After Newton’s MVP season, he was the consensus #1 quarterback in the Fantasy world heading towards draft day! While some waited until the 4th or 5th round to draft Cam, he was normally the first quarterback off the board. Newton ended the season ranked 17th in total points and had a Clutch Rating of 40%. This left him ranked 22nd in consistency. Where will he end up in next year’s Fantasy draft? Hard to tell at this point. We’ll see what the offseason brings.

BEST VALUE

This award goes to the quarterback that had the lowest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making the best value at quarterback in 2016.

And the winner is….

Dak Prescott

Yes, he’s going to win the Rookie of the Year award as well. However, Prescott was not a highly-regarded rookie but was pressed into action after Tony Romo injured his back. Prescott not only led the Cowboys to the playoffs, but he was a consistent asset for most Fantasy teams. His preseason ADP was QB23. He ended the year ranked 6th in total points and was tied for fourth in consistency with a 75% Clutch Rating.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the rookie quarterback that had ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Dak Prescott

With the #1 and #2 overall picks in the draft, you would have expected Jared Goff and Carson Wentz to grab this award! But, Goff didn’t even start his first game until late in the season and Wentz was good, but inconsistent (as are most rookies). Prescott did something that only three other rookie quarterbacks have done in the past 10 years and that is earn over a 60% Clutch Rating in their rookie season. He ended the year ranked 6th in total points and was tied for fourth in consistency with a 75% Clutch Rating. The only quarterback with a better Clutch Rating in their rookie season was Cam Newton in 2011 with a 81% Clutch Rating.

CLUTCH-LESS

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the season with a high ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was lower than expected. Therefore, making him look more valuable (due to high points rank) than he was worth to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Russell Wilson

Wilson had his worst season out of his last four years, consistency-wise. He ended the season ranked 10th in total points but his Clutch Rating of only 44% left him ranked 19th in consistency. He’s not going to be a top pick in 2017 unless someone bites on the that Top 10 ranking in total points. Just say no.

CLUTCH-MORE

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the season with a low ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was higher than expected. Therefore, making him look less valuable (due to high points rank) to his Fantasy teams, when he was actually worth MORE!

And the winner is….

Tom Brady

An awards ceremony without Tom Brady? Unheard of! Brady missed the first four games of the year due to deflated balls. However, when he returned he was as good as ever! He ended the season ranked 20th in total points (due to four missed games). His consistency though was top-notch as he ended the year with a Clutch Ranking of 75. This tied him for fourth place. He should provide solid value next year as well. Remember though, he’s not getting any younger, so at some point, the wheels may fall off.

CLUTCH COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the 2015 season with a poor ranking in total Fantasy Points and consistency. However, in 2016, he had the greatest improvement in both categories making him very valuable to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Matt Ryan

As cool as Matty Ice can be, his consistency has never really been a strong point for him. 2015 was no different as he ended the year ranked 18th in consistency with a 44% Clutch Rating. However, in 2016, he had an MVP-type season. He ended the year third in total points and he had an 81% Clutch Rating in consistency. This ranked him second with only one less Clutch Game than Aaron Rodgers. If the Falcons offense stays intact over the offseason, he’s a solid QB1 for most Fantasy teams in 2017.

CLUTCH MVP

This award goes to the quarterback that ended the 2016 with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Aaron Rodgers

Did Jordy Nelson make a difference for Rodgers, after missing all of 2015? Damn right, he did! The return of Nelson and a healthy Randall Cobb helped Aaron Rodgers regain his Fantasy consistency throne at the quarterback position. Rodgers had the only dual #1 status in both total points AND consistency in 2016 for any of the positions. He earned almost 30 more points that second place in total points and his 88% Clutch Rating was the only ranking over 85%! He’s the preseason #1 for quarterbacks heading into next season! Get him in the 4th or 5th round and smile as you lock in the most consistent stud quarterback for every week!
